| New Town |

| |
The New Town, that was founded by King Charles IV in 1348, was very carefully laid out around three largest central markets: the Horse Market (Wenceslas Square), the Hay Market (Senovazne Square), the Cattle Market (Charless Square). Twice larger, then the Old Town, the districr was inhabited by tradesmen and craftsmen such as bkacksmiths, wheelwriths and brewers. In the late 19th century, much of the New Town was ruined and completely redeveloped, giving it the appearance that it has today. The 60 meter wide and 750 meter long boulevard was built during the Charles IV period when it was used as a Horse market. In the upper part of the boulevard you can see the famous statue of St. Wenceslas on his horse. It was the good king Vaclav, who was killed by his brother a thousand years ago, later he has become the national czech hero. The famous artist Jan Myslbek began to create this statue in the 1884 and it was finished only 36 years later.
The central cathedral in 14th-16th centuries was the Monastery on Slovany, where Karl the Great situated wealthy and powerful order of Benedicts. In 1419 son of Karel the IV – Wenceslas the II founded in new town city organization, where were included people who fighter against Hussite movement, that started to arise in those time. In 1784 New Town was consolidated together with other districts into the city of Prague. Modern and Medieval architecture, cathedrals, green parks, romantic embankments of Vltava river make the district of New Town the most attractive to the tourists. Lots of comfortable, cozy hotels we can recommend of Prague. |
