| Karlovy Vary City Guide |

The development of Karlovy Vary was closely liked to the beneficial curative effect of its warm mineral springs, which have fascinated people and appealed to their imagination ever since their discovery. Karlovy Vary first entered the historical records on August 14th, 1370, the day on which the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV granted the community the freedoms and rights of a royal city. The privilege was endorsed by all subsequent Czech sovereigns.
At the turn of the 17th century two natural disasters inflicted a heavy blow on the spa's prosperity and expansion. On May 9th, 1582 the town was engulfed by a great flood, and a few years later, on August 13th, 1604, it was completely destroyed by fire, which burned to the ground 99 of its 102 buildings. The 18th century was a period of expansion and glory that lasted several decades. The spa's fame grew considerably owing to two visits by the Russian Tsar Peter the Great, who sought treatment there in 1711 and 1712. Credit for the extensive modernisation of the balneological methods applied in Karlovy Vary goes to David Becher (1725-1792), a highly talented doctor who introduced a number of new methods of treatment and greatly contributed to the spa's further expansion. Karlovy Vary`s promising development in the first half of the 18th century was temporarily halted by a great fire on May 23rd, 1759, which destroyed 224 buildings. Recovery took place in a relatively short time.
The early 19th century witnessed another boom in spa treatment. Even the upheaval caused by the Napoleonic Wars failed to undermine the town's prosperity. World War I meant the end of the "good old days", reversing the spa's previous promising development. In spite of this a number of important construction projects were implemented, including the Březová dam on the river Teplá (1936), and methods of treatment were further improved.
