A historical exhibition of the Brno City Museum presenting to its visitors some thousand original exhibits (and just a few replicas) is divided thematically into eight parts, clarifying some important moments in the history of Brno from the first mention of the town dating back to 1091 until the rise of the so called Greater Brno in April 1919. The first thematic part is devoted to the oldest historical period of Brno and the second focuses on medieval Brno. Life in the medieval town is presented here in the form of articles made in workshops, by glass blowers, blacksmiths, sword makers, and a visual model of Brno of that time. The third topic of the historical exhibition is Brno at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries when Brno competed with Olomouc for the position of provincial metropolis. The display in this part includes unique chests for provincial Articles of the Law decorated with coats of arms of the leading Moravian noble families, renaissance furniture, weapons and various other exhibits, including the coats of arms of the Moravian aristocrats and knights who took an active part in the uprising of the estates and were later imprisoned at Špilberk. An attractive exhibit that will surely hold the interest of both the small and grown-up visitor is the partially reconstructed Jewish Gate, which used to stand at the entrance of the present Masaryk Street.
Considered to be one of the most significant events in the history of Brno is the successful defence of the town against the Swedish troops of General Torstenson in the summer months of 1645. The exhibition presents this notable event in two models of Brno and its surroundings, through views of the besiegers’ camps and progress of the battles. The dramatic character of that time is also illustrated with numerous weapons used on both sides. Another part of the exhibition is devoted to the main participants of the then clash - Raduit de Souches, the commander in chief of the Brno defence, Jiří Jakub Ogilvy, the commanding officer of the Špilberk garrison, Sack from Bohuňovice, the district commissioner, General Torstenson, the commander in chief of the Swedish troops and other leading figures. |
